Rolex Daytona – A Rare Breed

As a secondhand Rolex dealer, one of the watches we get asked about a lot is the Daytona. I suppose a large part of this comes from the fact it is a rare model. A self-winding chronometer wristwatch with chronograph born in 1961, the Daytona came in three different models; the Cosmograph, the Cosmograph Daytona and the Oyster Cosmograph Daytona and was in production until 1988. After this the winding mechanism was taken from Zenith’s El Primero and renamed to be Oyster Perpetual Cosmograph. Nowadays, and since the year 2000, Rolex began manufacturing their own movements called the 4130. It is the probably due to the change in movements which make the original Rolex Daytona such a rare, and therefore, popular watches. I read an article recently where a person actually searched for 2 years before finally being given their “dream” Daytona for Christmas. I guess it gives an idea of what to expect if you decide to you want to own one of these yourself!
